Tenebrae
A Service of Shadows
Tenebrae comes from the Latin word for darkness and is traditionally a service for Good Friday. The service is centered on the slow dimming of the lights until the passage about the death of our Lord is read. At that time, a bell is tolled three times, each toll representing eleven years of Christ’s earthly life.
